The Word on The Street

I took in a bit of “The Word on the Street” festival this afternoon. The streets around the Lethbridge Public Library were closed off for presenters, booths and FOOD. I ate a hot dog.

Sunday, September 25, 2011 marks the day that Lethbridge joins Toronto, Vancouver, Halifax, Kitchener and Saskatoon in hosting the national Word On The Street Festival and celebration of literacy.

Hosted by the Lethbridge Public Library, the Lethbridge festival is designed to be a playful, all-ages, spill-out-into-the-street community event with something for everyone to see, hear, do, and of course, eat!

Whetstone #2 now available

I got the heads up from my sister, the assistant editor for Whetstone magazine, that issue #2 is now available. For those unfamiliar: Whetstone is a biannual literary magazine managed by student-enthusiasts at the University of Lethbridge with occasional help from members of the English Department. Originally established in 1971, Whetstone was revived in September …

Skateistan builds ramps, not bombs

So my friend Erika lives in Afghanistan. She helps run a totally radical youth educational program called Skateistan: Skateistan is Afghanistan’s—and the world’s—first co-educational skateboarding school. The school engages growing numbers of urban and internally-displaced youth in Afghanistan through skateboarding, and provides them with new opportunities in cross-cultural interaction, education, and personal empowerment. Our students …

Lethbridge’s Straight Dope

If you’re looking to score some LSD, Layne Whipple is not your man. However, he passed along a rare treasure from days long past – one that smelled more like old books than anything else.

This little capsule was put on the streets by the Travel and Convention Association of Southern Alberta, showing that people weren’t always so tight-assed (but I guess it was the 70s, after all). Hit the jump to see its contents!

An arts community?

Here’s a bit of surprising news from the Lethbridge Herald this morning: In what promises to be a major downtown makeover, city council has enthusiastically endorsed a plan to build two major new arts facilities along a one-block plaza just east of Galt Gardens. The two-phase plan is to begin with a new $12.6-million community …

Featured Artist: Martin Warszawski

I’ve recently been asked, “What aspect of Lethbridge stands out for you the most?” And, besides the stupid ridiculous amount of trucks that plague this city, I would have to say it’s the amount of talented people I have met along the way (Lethbridge is also full of them).

In particular, I am proud to feature an amazing artist, and one of my best friends, Martin Warszawski. Since back in the day, he and I were creative influences upon one another, drawing comics, recording puppet shows and a Shakespeare video assignment featuring a dead gopher (we found it like that).

Lethbridge Pwns

With an upcoming refresh to the Canadian edition of Monopoly, you can throw around money like our very own city council! Though Lethbridge is one of many Canadian cities who are nominated to appear in the game, we Lethbians must vote for our city to secure it’s spot. MONOPOLY is launching a new Canadian Edition …

High-level bridge gets lit once in a while

2009 marked the centennial of the Lethbridge High-Level Bridge. As part of the celebration, somebody thought to light up the bridge at night this past September.

Unfortunately (but not really), I was in Las Vegas at the time so I missed the first lighting. Luckily, this past Remembrance Day they lit it up once again, which I also missed (I forgot).

Thankfully, my colleague Martina Emard took some amazing photos and has allowed me to publish there here!

More photos and thoughts after the jump.

A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it’s better to be thoroughly sure

My liver can attest, I’m a connoisseur of beers. Imagine my delight when I discovered that Lethbridge has its own beer festival with over 100 types of domestic and international brews, probably including Old Style Pilsner, one of my dear favourites (among MANY others).   Tickets are only $10 in advance, available at The Wine …

Lethbridge Sausage Party!

If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself. That’s what I always say.

Last night, Scott (a.k.a. Heavy P) hosted an Oktoberfest party. We sat down to a feast of Oktoberfest sausage, sauerkraut, perogies and my special bacon+onion gnocchi dish, all accompanied by a wide assortment of fine European beers and great Bavarian music! The aroma in the household was very manly, to say the least.
